The 2024–2025 crop year brought strong results across Canada’s pulse sector. Overall production for major field crops increased compared to last year, supported by improved yields and stable growing conditions. Lentil and chickpea markets both showed higher export volumes, driven by strong international demand from key buyers such as Turkey, India, the UAE, and the EU.
Lentil market overview
Lentil exports reached one of their strongest levels in recent years, supported by solid demand from South Asia and the Middle East. Higher domestic use and larger carry-out stocks indicate a stable market, even as prices adjusted from last season’s highs.
For the 2025–2026 crop year, lentil production in Western Canada is projected to grow further, with total volumes approaching record levels. Green lentil output, in particular, is set to expand, while red lentil production remains steady. Export activity is expected to stay firm, and top destinations like India, Turkey, and the EU are likely to continue sourcing from Canada thanks to consistent quality and supply reliability.
While international prices have softened compared to last year due to higher global stocks, Canada’s lentil supply outlook remains positive. For buyers, this period offers a favorable opportunity to secure shipments before new season trends begin to shift.
The Canadian chickpea sector has also seen healthy export movement, particularly to the EU and Pakistan. With larger harvest volumes expected in 2025–2026 and steady seeding growth in both Canada and the U.S., the global chickpea market is heading toward higher overall availability.
This expansion in supply could help stabilize prices and create competitive buying conditions in the short term. As global consumption continues to rise—especially across Europe and South Asia—consistent sourcing from Canada remains key for buyers seeking quality and reliability.
Market outlook
Harvest progress across Canada has been strong, and forecasts suggest near-record production for several pulse categories. Although global prices are currently under downward pressure, market fundamentals continue to support long-term growth for Canadian pulses.
For international buyers, the current season presents an advantageous window to confirm supply contracts—before upcoming market adjustments potentially affect availability and logistics.
