Split Red Lentils | Masoor Dal

Split red lentils, known as Masoor Dal across South Asia, are dehulled red lentils split into two halves. This is the fastest-cooking form, ready in 10–15 minutes, and breaks down into a smooth, creamy texture ideal for dal, soups, purées, and baby food. It’s the most widely traded form of red lentil globally due to its short cooking time and versatility.

Football Lentils | Whole Red Lentils, Dehulled

Football lentils are red lentils with the husk removed but left whole (not split), the name comes from their small, football-like shape once dehulled. They cook faster than Crimson lentils while still holding some texture, making them a popular choice for whole-lentil dishes, retail packaging, and markets where a dehulled but unsplit form is preferred, such as parts of the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Crimson Lentils | Whole Red Lentils with Husk

Crimson lentils are the raw, whole form of red lentil, harvested with the natural husk (skin) still on. This gives them a firmer texture, longer shelf life, and a slightly earthier flavor than dehulled forms. Because they retain their shape well during cooking, Crimson lentils are widely used in canning, salads, grain bowls, and by processors who dehull or split them further downstream.
